Services for Raymie Jo McClelland Thompson of Sweetwater were held at 11:00 o’clock am on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Mc Coy Chapel of Memories, with Dr. Andy Hurst officiating.
Private burial services will be at Sweetwater Cemetery at a later time under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. A family visitation was held 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Monday ,September 13, 2021 at the funeral home. Mrs. Thompson passed away on September 10, 2021 at the age of 91.
Mrs. Thompson was born on June 23, 1930 to William Ernest “Speck” McClelland and Hazel Stokes McClelland in Sonora, Texas. She was raised in Sonora and graduated from Sonora High School in 1948. She later moved to San Angelo and attended San Angelo Business College.
While living and working in San Angelo, she met and fell in love with George Thompson of Sweetwater. They married in 1958 and were together until his death in 1989. Mrs. Thompson was married for 31 years and was a widow for 31 years.
Mrs. Thompson worked with her husband and his father in the family insurance and real estate business, The Thompson Agency, for many years. In 1978, she began a career with Nolan County, first in the County Judge’s office, then as Court Coordinator for the Nolan County Court at Law and the 32nd Judicial District Court. She retired in 2001 after 23 years of service to the county and the courts.
Mrs. Thompson joined the First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater shortly after she married and was a member of the church until her death. She had a very active church life, serving the church as a member of the Session, and was a founding member of Earl’s Girls women’s study and support group. She served on the organizing committee for the Rolling Plains Hospital Auxiliary and was a volunteer for several years.
After she retired, Mrs. Thompson was a volunteer with the Brown Bag food program and the Women’s Resource Center. She was also a longtime member of the Sweetwater Cemetery Trust Fund’s board of directors.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George Thompson, and her daughter Georgana Thompson of Sweetwater.
Survivors include her daughter, Tracey Stevens and husband Blake of Sweetwater, son Terrell Thompson and wife Tina of Lubbock, son Rhea Thompson of Abilene, son-in-law Tommy Roberson of Virginia, brother Bill McClelland and wife Carol of Lincoln, Nebraska, sister-in-law Nell Thompson of Lubbock, and nieces Carra McClelland of Nebraska, Elaine Barnum of Carrollton, and Leslie Olson of Austin.
She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Jenny Smola Mendez and wife Loni, Lily Smola, Evan Thompson and wife Kathryn Thompson and Poppy, Allison Rawson and husband Bradley, Morgan Thompson and fiancée Jeremy Parsley, Todd Shook and wife Amy, Randall Thompson, Cliff Thompson and wife Nicole, as well as 7 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Sweetwater, Women’s Resource Center, or the Sweetwater Cemetery Trust Fund.
