Alice Rita Schlagal, age 91, left this world on January 24, 2021, to join her departed husband of 70 years, Lt. Col. Robert C. Schlagal. She is survived by her daughter Trudy Rea, son-in-law Dr. Steven Rea, son Bobby Schlagal and daughter-in-law Donita. She leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Her journey began on July 12, 1929, in Santa Rita, Texas, where she would acquire her name from the first oil well drilled in the Permian Basin. Her early years were spent in Texon, Texas, graduating high school from Big Lake. A young boy from Rankin, Robert, would become the love of her life. Their lifelong adventure, including military service, would allow them to travel and live in nine different states, ultimately returning to her beloved Texas.

Alice’s life was one of simplicity, encompassing faith, family and friends. Over 30 years of service was dedicated to Eastern Star, where she provided musical accompaniment. As a lifelong member of Alamo Heights Baptist Church, she will be remembered for her devotion to serving those in need.

Honorary pallbearers will be her son-in-law Dr. Steven Rea and lifelong friend Bob Wilson. In celebration of their grandmother’s life, her six granddaughters will serve as the pallbearers: Alicia Rea, Ashley Rea, Arianne Rea, Allison Rea, Misty Schlagal and Mindy Grizzell. A very special thank you to her caregivers Esavelia Mejia, Marie Greer, Melissa Portillo, and Delma Romero.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 29, from 5-7 pm at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 30, at 12:30 pm in the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel. Live-streaming will be available at www.npwelch.com. A private family burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to Alamo Heights Baptist Church or the Hospice Foundation of America.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
