Charlotte Kavanaugh Wilson

Charlotte Kavanaugh Wilson of Sonora passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at the Schleicher County Medical Center.

Charlotte was born April 6, 1920 in Richland Springs to Birdie Priscilla Seale and John Herring Kavanaugh.

Her father was a newspaper man and they lived in several small towns always moving towards the central Texas area where there were colleges for their children’s education who were May, John, Elizabeth, Bill, Charlotte and Joe Ed.

They settled in Round Rock where Charlotte graduated as Salutatorian of her class then obtained her B.A. degree in education from The University of Texas.

She taught her first year of school in Wharton then moved to Sonora in 1942 where she taught Spanish and some years of English and History until her retirement in 1985 (taking a few years off when her boys were young).

She married Leo James Wilson on May 27, 1944 and they had 3 sons Jimmy, John K, and Joe Ray. James died in 1964 and she continued teaching and raising her sons by herself.

She was a very talented musician and lent her talents by being organist for the Methodist church for over 50 years. She also played for countless weddings and funerals and well as accompanist for band solo contestants.

She was a member of that Church since 1942 and was organist until she was almost 98 years young.

She was also an active member of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gama and the Sonora-Ozona Sewing club.

Charlotte loved her family and friends and loved life and liked to travel and went all over the world.

She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, her husband James, her son Joe Ray, and grandson Joseph Jay Wilson.
She is survived by her children Leo James (Jim) Jr. and Cherrie Wilson, John K and Karen Wilson. Grandchildren Russell Wilson, Heather and Michael Harms, Scott and Crista Wilson, Darcey and Mike Dwyer, Penny and Jeremy Dawson, Heather Akkerman, and Jamie and Curtis Tidmore. She is also survived by 16 great grandchildren, a host of family and friends who loved her including Joyce Raska, Diana Condra, and Lilia Flores.
Pallbearers are Scott Wilson, Jeremy Dawson, Mike Dwyer, Ed Duncan, Cliff Brister and Virgil Burge. Honorary pallbearers are Charley Joe “Tee” Taliaferro, Bob Brockman, Jean Redman, Joyce Raska, Dianna Condra, Lilia Flores and this list could go on and on with people who have been Special in “Mom’s” life.

The family wishes to thank all the nurses, doctors and care givers who have taken such good care of “Mom” all these years.

A celebration of her life will be held Friday, August 31, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at 1st United Methodist Church in Sonora with burial to follow in Sonora Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Charlotte Wilson Music Scholarship fund at the First United Methodist Church of Sonora.
