The 2021 Sonora Bronco football season came to a close on Friday night in Tiger Stadium, Slaton Texas. The defending State Champion Canadian Wildcats (9-3,4-2) defeated the Broncos 56-13 and took home the gold ball. They will play Abernathy (11-1,4-1) in a Region I semifinal game on Friday in Amarillo.

The Wildcats’ starters had suffered many injuries during non-district play. However, most were back in action for the Area game. The Canadian offense poured on 488 yards and ran 75 plays using their no huddle offense. The Wildcat defense held Sonora to a season low five first downs.

The bright spot for the Broncos’ offense was Junior Hunter O’Banon’s exciting long touchdown runs. He rushed nine times for 159 yards and two TDs – one for 78 yards and the other for 71. He was able to get around the edge twice in the first half and take it to the house. Dailen Luna got to wear a black helmet Friday night, and was one of two for PAT kicks.

Despite the season ending loss, the Sonora Broncos finished with their first winning season since 2017.
