The Sonora Bronco varsity football team was on the road last Friday in Alpine ISD’s stadium and played the 3A Div 2 Alpine Bucks (0-3) for the 23rd time in football history. Last year, the Broncos defeated the Bucks 42 -19 for Sonora’s Homecoming.

The Bucks won the toss and deferred. The Broncos were defending the north endzone. Juan Castillo took the opening kickoff nineteen yards, but the return was negated by a fifteen-yard Sonora penalty. Sonora started in the hole and was penalized twice more on this drive. The Bucks scored their one and only touchdown at 8:59 in the first quarter on third down. The Alpine kicker’s PAT kick was blocked.

The score was 6-0 Alpine. That was all the Alpine offense could muster versus the smothering Sonora defense. The rest of the night belonged to the Bronco offense and the two INTs by Jaime Buitron and Hunter O’Banon- both patrolling for errant passes.

The Broncos scored with 2:40 left in the second quarter when senior Jonah Galvan made a 4th down reception at the Buck 21 yard line. He was tripped, but slid into the endzone for the score. Junior Dailen Luna’s PAT kick was good. The Broncos took the 7-6 lead that they never relinquished.

Sonora started their next offensive series after an Alpine turnover on downs. The Alpine punter landed the kick at the Bronco six yard line. Edgar DeLuna got the call and got the Broncos out of trouble by racing 83 yards before being horse-collared. After the penalty was stepped off, Buitron’s pass to Castillo in the endzone was good with 20 seconds left in the half. Luna’s PAT kick was good. At the half, Sonora led 14-6.
The third Sonora touchdown was at the three minute mark in the third quarter. Buitron hit his favorite receiver and fellow pitcher Jonah Galvan for an 11-yard strike in the corner of the south endzone. The Luna kick was good. Alpine had no answer and the score was now 21-6.

The final Bronco touchdown was late in the fourth quarter at 2:51 left in the game. The senior running back O’Banon got the call and sprinted 11 yards into the right side of the north endzone. Luna’s fourth kick was just wide right. The final score was 27-6 Sonora.

Sonora goes to 3-1 in non-district play and finishes up at home this Friday for Homecoming versus 2A Harper Longhorns. Harper is 1-3 this year after losing to Ingram Tom Moore, Sabinal, and D’Hanis. The Longhorns defeated Center Point last Friday. Game time is 7:30 PM. Go Big Red.
