City council members met Monday, August 30, 2021 for a brief special meeting to act on the proposed tax rate and budget approval.

The current tax rate is $0.717566 per $100.00 valuation of property. The council members voted unanimously to adopt the no-new-revenue tax rate. With this tax rate it will raise to $0.757769 per $100.00 valuation of property. Fortunately, for tax payers this increase will not be reflected to them. The values have dropped but with this no-new-revenue the city will actually be receiving the same amount.

The board approved the proposed the 2021-2022 fiscal budget of $6,284,238.00. The motion was made by Darrell Barker and Harold Martinez seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

Also on the agenda was the interim construction loan for the airport fueling. City Attorney, Clint Griffin and City Manager, Art Fuentes has been in contact with Fuel Me to look at options. Griffin noted that the lease option for the loan. His recommendation would be to pull funds from the line of credit.

He spoke with Fuel Me and voiced the options from the council members. Fuel Me has verbally agreed to cover any and all interest or fees than may occur. Griffin thinks that it should only be about 60 – 90 days till the work is complete and the financing to take over so there should not be a lot of fees come about.

Mayor Juanita Gomez presided over the meeting with councilmen Mike Sanchez, Lionel Cervantez, Jr., Harold Martinez and Darrell Barker in attendance.

The Sonora City Council are scheduled to meet the third Monday of the month at city hall. All meeting are open to the public.
