On Monday, April 19, 2021 the Sutton County Commissioners met in a special meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the district courtroom.

The meeting was called to order and a prayer offered by county Judge Steve Smith. Judge Smith opened the meeting to public comment.

Ben Pool was present and offered his appreciation of Judge Smith and his service to the community “I want to say thank you to Judge Smith, he has done a good job! Commissioners, please talk to everyone and find someone to guide us over the next several years”, added Pool while addressing the commissioners in regard to naming a replacement for county judge.

Next on the agenda the commissioners appointed Fred Perez, the longest serving commissioner on the court to serve as acting county judge for the scheduled executive session. This was unanimously approved.

Judge Smith then read his resignation to the county commissioners; his last day will be June 6, 2021. The commissioners accepted his resignation. Last Monday, April 12, 2021 Mr. Smith was named as the CEO for the Lillian M. Hudspeth Hospital.

Judge Smith then delivered the county judges report highlighting that the Keep Sonora Beautiful Committee is hosting a city wide cleanup scheduled for this weekend. He also reported that while taking the plumber to the jail last week to discuss the toilet installation there were found to be missing parts that must be ordered or replaced prior to the toilet install. Next he reported that there has been a new water fountain installed in the courthouse and he reminded all in attendance to vote in the school board election, which is now open for early voting.

Judge Smith advised the commissioners that he would recommend advertising for the county judge position in the newspaper to see who is interested and to look for a person that will be interested in serving for a long period of time.

The court then entered into closed session, upon return to open session the commissioners approved an action to advertise and accept application for the county judge position until May 7, 2021.

Persons interested in applying for the position may pick up an application and or seek more information related to the position from the county treasurer’s office located inside the Sutton County Courthouse.

The meeting was adjourned. The next regular meeting of the Sutton County Commissioners Court will be held on Monday, April 26, 2021 at 9:00 a.m.in the district courtroom. The meetings are open to the public.
