Members of the Sonora City Council met Monday, April 18, 2022 where Mayor Juanita Gomez made the proclamation for Police Week.

She proclaimed that May 11, 2022 to May 17, 2022 is National Police Week with May 15, 2022 being Peace Officer Memorial Day.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

Belia Fay reminded the council that early voting will begin April 25, 2022 and continue through May 3, 2022. It will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Monday through Thursday at City Hall. Election day will be Saturday, May 7, 2022 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All races are uncontested. There will be one proposition on the ballot. It states “The reauthorization of the local sales tax in the City of Sonora, Texas at the rate of one fourth of one percent to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal street. The tax expires on the fourth anniversary of the date of this election unless the imposition of the tax is reauthorized.” This is not a new tax to the community just one that needs reauthorizing to continue work.

The City of Sonora is still looking for someone to manage the pool for the summer. The hours have been voted to stay the same as previous years. The pool will open to the public on May 31, 2022 and will close August 7, 2022. Hours will be 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. closed on Wednesdays. Party rental hours will be 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mayor Juanita Gomez presided over the meeting with councilmen Mike Sanchez, Lionel Cervantez, Jr., Harold Martinez and Darrell Barker in attendance. The Sonora City Council meet the 3rd Monday of the month and the public is encouraged to attend.
