The JV Broncos traveled to Eldorado as the final part of the Thursday triple header last week and “threw” their second shutout in a row.

Sonora started off slow with one touchdown and a two point conversion in the first half. At 6:53 in the first quarter, Ryan Mendez scored on a keeper and Justin Lozano carried the ball into the end zone for the two point conversion.

Although there was no scoring in the remainder of the first half, there were some outstanding defensive plays by the Bronco JV team. Sophomore corner Jorge Leija made an over the shoulder interception, Carmelo Alviso and Aaron Martinez sacked the Eagle quarterback and Lozano also had an interception.

Offensively, Mendez’ passes were complete to Caleb Sanchez, David Luna and Ashton Bryant. The half finished with Jose Guerra unable to bring down a Mendez pass in the end zone.

Sonora’s defense got off to a quick start in the third quarter when Brian Mendoza made a ‘Scoop n Score’ at 9:29 on the clock and Dakoda Borders trotted in for the two points. The next Bronco drive started after the team in green fumbled. Mendez called his own number and took the ball in for the six points. The two point conversion failed, but the score was 22-0 with 5:01 still in the third quarter.

The Broncos scored twice in the fourth quarter with Borders’ and Mendez’ touchdowns after a 30 yard run by Julian Zaragoza. Let’s just say that the Bronco defense continued to make life miserable for the Eagle offense. Martinez, Kellen Norrell, Raul Arredondo, Logan Mayfield and Justin Gonzalez were in the Eagle backfield as much as the Eagle running backs. Alviso also recovered another Eldorado fumble.

The final score was 36-0 in favor of the boys in red and white.
