During the April 12, 2021 regular meeting of the Sonora ISD Board of Trustees, Michael Kissire was named lone finalist for the superintendant position.
Don Gibson has been serving as interim superintendant for the district since the position was left vacant after the resignation of Ross Aschenbeck in December of 2020.

Kissire is currently the Principal at the Elementary School. He is expected to be offered a contract after the 21 day waiting period that is required per TEA regulations. An official start date will then be determined.

Mr. Kissire is a familiar face around Sonora; he has been employed by SISD for 24 years.

For the past seven years he has served the district as a campus administrator, prior to that he was the Ag Teacher. Mr. Kissire has a son, Burkes who is 10 years old and attends Sonora Elementary School. His parents, Harry and Jan Mitchell are also residents of Sutton County. Mr. Kissire is very involved in the community and in agriculture; he currently serves and has served on multiple boards in the Concho Valley and across Texas.

For the past nine years he has been Superintendent of the Ag Mechanics Project Show for the San Angelo Livestock Show and Rodeo, for four years prior to that he assisted with the project show.
Locally, he is the current Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Hudspeth Hospital Ranch, and President, of the Board of Directors, Sutton County Predator Management Association. He is also a member of the Sutton County Ag Advisory Board, the Sutton County Junior Livestock Show Sales Committee, and the Fling Ding Club.

Mr. Kissire graduated high school in Wills Point, TX. He then attended college and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Tarleton State University. He continued his education at Lamar College earning his Master’s Degree in Education.

“I am humbled and honored to work with everyone in Sonora in celebrating our tradition of success.” explained Kissire when discussing this new position.

During the meeting the board handled regular agenda items and addressed the COVID-19 mask requirements. After discussion regarding the most recent mask survey completed by staff indicating that 61% of the SISD staff members preferred that masks be optional, the members voted to change the current mask requirement allowing masks to be optional at SISD campuses.

The board then discussed adding a new requirement that band directors and coaches have a CDL endorsement on their drivers’ license in order to be able to drive students in buses to various events in an effort to increase districts efficiency.

The employment contract for Tiffany Weston was approved; she will be a teacher in the district.

Board Members in attendance included: President, Shanna Castro and members Mason Martinez, John Jones, Jerry Jiminez, Peter Duran and Cynthia Perez.

The next regular meeting of the Sonora ISD Board of Trustees will be held on Monday, May 10th at 5:30 p.m. in the board room.
