Sutton County Judge Steve Smith signed a declaration for 'Local State of Disaster for Public Health Emergency' Thursday afternoon at the Sutton County Courthouse Annex Courtroom in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The declaration states, “Whereas, extraordinary measures must be taken to contain COVID-19 and prevent its spread throughout Sutton County, that includes the banning of community gatherings of over 10 people and, additionally, potentially requiring individuals, groups of individuals, or property to undergo additional measures that prevent or control the spread of disease.”

By order of the declaration, the County is authorized to take any actions necessary to promote health and suppress the virus, including the quarantine of persons and occupied structures, examining and regulating hospitals, regulating ingress and egress from the County, regulating ingress and egress to occupied structures, establishment of quarantine stations, emergency hospitals, and other hospitals, and insuring compliance for those who do not comply with the counties rules and directives.

Additionally, the declaration bans community gatherings of 10 or more people.

The declaration will remain in place for a period of not more than seven days from Thursday, March 19, unless continued or renewed by the Commissioners Court of Sutton County.

VIOLATION OF THE EXECUTIVE ORDER:

A person who knowingly or intentionally violates this order, commits an offense, may be punished by a fine up to $1,000 or confinement in jail for a term not to exceed 180 days.

Both the Declaration of Local Disaster and Executive Order must be renewed every 7 days by the County Commissioners.
