A local man was arrested Tuesday afternoon May 7 following a month’s long investigation by Sutton County law enforcement agencies.

Ernest Adams, 47, of Sonora, was arrested on a charge of manufacturing and delivery of a controlled Substance, penalty group 1, a felony offense. He was booked into the Sutton County Jail on a $25,000 bond, according to Chief Deputy DuWayne Castro.

Additional charges such as endangering a child could be forthcoming, Castro added.

The Sutton County Sheriff’s Office obtained a search and arrest warrant Tuesday and stopped Adams who was driving a vehicle in the area of Water Street and 2nd Street.

He and a female passenger were detained at the scene while officers searched the vehicle. Methamphetamine was found in the vehicle resulting in Adams arrest, Castro said.

The woman was released at the scene, Castro said, because authorities did not have sufficient evidence to charge her.

Adams was transported by a deputy to his residence on Allen Drive where he was questioned while law enforcement agencies conducted a search of the property resulting in the seizure of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and weapons.

Four children, who also lived in the residence, arrived home from school to find law enforcement officers searching the house while nearby neighbors watched the spectacle from their yards.

Child Protective Services was notified and the children were released pending further action, authorities noted.

Castro said local law enforcement have been aware the situation at the home for months and the evidence in this investigation could lead to additional arrests in the future.

“It’s a team effort,” Castro said. “It takes time to properly investigate these types of matters. I know the neighbors and other people in the community were aware of it and wanted us to do something about it. Unfortunately, it just takes time, but we were finally able to make an arrest.”
