Sonora ISD school board members heard a presentation Monday, November 9, from Region 15 representatives regarding search options for hiring an interim superintendent.

While the board has not received and accepted an official letter of resignation from the current superintendent, Ross Aschenbeck, his departure is anticipated.

In the meantime, the board is taking a proactive approach and moving forward with the process to find an interim.

In addition to filling the administrative position, trustees also filled a board vacancy.

Peter Duran was sworn in as School Board Member, Precinct 4. Immediately following his taking the oath of office, he took his seat as a voting member on the board.

In other business, board members approved consent agenda items and reviewed the business manager’s report. Consent items included the Tax Assessor/Collector report and minutes of the October 12, 2020 regular meeting. No action was taken on the manager’s report.

Board members then voted in favor of ending board resolution that was passed on March 19, 2020. The action ended the emergency COVID-19 resolution that gave the superintendent the authority to act in place of the school board.

An amendment to the 2020-2021 academic calendar was approved based on Aschenbeck’s recommendation. The amendment pertains directly to summer school days.

As well, the board authorized the superintendent to amend the Sonora ISD Asynchronous Plan as needed and OK’d the district’s continued participation in the West Texas Food Service Cooperative.

Next, trustees gave their approval on the District Improvement Plan as presented.

In place of his report, Superintendent Aschenbeck turned the podium over to High School Principal Rene Valeriano who talked about COVID-19 protocol.

No remarkable changes have been made to the current protocol observed by the district. With the cooperation of school administrators, teachers, staff and students, Sonora ISD campuses are the safest and cleanest places for kids, Aschenbeck added.

Finally, trustees took leave behind closed doors to discuss further the Interim Superintendent and hiring of a teacher.

No action was taken.

Board President Shanna Petty-Castro presided over the meeting. Board members Peter Duran, Mason Martinez, Jerry Jimenez, Colby Bates and Cynthia Perez were present.

Board member John Jones was absent.
