Sonora High School’s Evan Shannon claimed the gold in the 3A boys 1600 Saturday, May 11, 2019, at the 2019 UIL State 1-3A Track and Field Meet in Austin.

Shannon, a senior, ran at a comfortable pace before breaking for the finish line, crossing with his second best time of his career at 4:26.69 for the 2019 state championship title.

His time was just shy of his first place finish at the 2019 UIL Region 1-3A Track Meet in Abilene this past April. Shannon completed the Regional run with a time of 4:24.18 also setting a new school record in the boys 1600 ending a 31-year best set back in 1988, according to Sonora Coach Eddie Favila.

Also competing for the Broncos at state, Wilson Johnson, David Delgado, Willie Munoz and Wesley Dutton finished in fourth place in the 3A boys 4x400 relay.

The Sonora Broncos placed eighth with 18 points at the state track meet.

Competing for the girls Lane Cahill vaulted 11 feet for a fifth place finish in the girls 3A Pole Vault and Camille Harris ran 2:19.42 for seventh place in the girls 300 meter.
