Sonora ISD announced Thursday, March 19th that it will suspend all school district operations for an additional period of time.

The Sonora ISD Board of Trustees also met Thursday evening to vote on a resolution authorizing Superintendent Ross Aschenbeck to make decisions regarding future closure and other changes to district activities throughout the upcoming weeks.

Trustees unanimously approved the resolution.

The action came in response to the quickly evolving situation with COVID-19 Coronavirus.

Last week, the district suspended classes for an additional week following the regular spring break. With Thursday’s board approval, the suspension has been pushed out to April 3rd.

Aschenbeck said the suspension of classes and other normal district operations is an effort to help in the national need to slow the spread of the Coronavirus.

As health officials report that cases are continuing to spread throughout the state of Texas and the increased probability of confirmed cases in our county seems likely, further suspension of classes will allow the district to determine, in coordination with local and state health officials, whether the spread of the virus is continuing or being contained.

In the meantime, Sonora ISD will continue to provide Grad-and-Go breakfast and lunch for students to pick up.

Additionally, teachers are providing home based instructional packets to students and keeping in touch via email.

Students are not required to return any assignments materials until classes resume.

Pick up times and locations are:

Pre-K through Elementary, Elementary Campus circle drive 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Middle School, Middle School campus, 1st Street, 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

High School, HS entrance, Tayloe Street, 9:00 a.m. and 12 p.m.

There will be a school board meeting Monday, March 30, at 5:30 p.m.
