The Sonora ISD Board of Trustees met on Monday, July 19, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Shana Castro, Board President. Michael Kissire, Superintendent then offered a prayer. There were no comments from visitors, so the board moved to on to addressing consent agenda items.

All SISD students will receive free breakfast and lunch for the coming school year. Mr. Kissire reported that Jill Hazelton, Cafeteria Supervisor has been working on the application process for this program and has received approval.

Mr. Kissire updated the board members on the status of ESSER grant, he reported that the application process is still underway, however the public survey is complete and school officials have been working to complete the remainder of the application. Kissire reported that this grant will benefit the school in many ways including allowing for a tutoring program to be designed as well as potentially offering a retention bonus to educators who worked during the COVID pandemic.

After consideration of consent agenda items Mr. Kissire delivered the superintendent report noting that Coach Blake Weston requested that junior high students be offered the opportunity to compete in cross country.

This request was approved and seventh and eighth grade students will have a cross country team this year.

Mr. Kissire also provided the board members with STAAR testing statistics, reporting that in nearly all subjects the students at SISD scored at or above state and regional levels. Although the STAAR scores indicated that SISD students were on track with meeting the state requirements, Mrs. Castro indicated that the tutoring program would benefit the students and further increase these scores.

The secondary school will hold Meet the Teacher on Monday, August 9th at 5:30 p.m. and registration for High School students will be held on Monday, August 2 at 10:00 a.m.
The first day of school for all Sonora ISD Students is Monday, August 16, 2021.The tardy bell for elementary /intermediate rings at 7:50, dismal is: Pre-K at 3:05, K-2 at 3:20 and 3-6 at 3:30.

The tardy bell for the secondary school rings at 7:55 with dismal at 3:45.

The board entered into executive session to discuss and consider employment of new professional employees; however, no action was taken.
Shana Castro, Board President presided over the meeting with Colby Bates, Vice President, Cynthia Perez, Secretary and board member Mason Martinez in attendance. John Jones, Peter Duran and Brenda Mungia were absent.

The next meeting of the Sonora ISD Board of Trustees is scheduled for Monday, August 9, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. in the meeting room located at the vocational building.
