A Sonora resident died early Tuesday morning, December 25,2018, on Interstate 10 about 4 miles West of town.

At 9:15 a.m. the Sutton County received a 911 call regarding a body on the right side of I-10 East near the 396 mile marker.

Charlene Edna Negley, a 56-year-old female of Sonora, was pronounced by Justice of the Peace Judge Jodi Harris, according to a preliminary report from the Department of Public Safety.

She appeared to have died from injuries sustained when she was hit by a vehicle while walking, according to the report.

The reported said Negley was walking along the right side of I-10 E near the 396 mile marker when she was struck by a vehicle. The exact time of the incident is not known.

When law enforcement arrived on scene there was no sight of a vehicle, according to the report.

“An unknown vehicle was traveling eastbound on I-10 near mile marker 396. With the evidence on scene, it appeared that the vehicle was traveling on the right lane when it struck a pedestrian,” the report said.

An official report is not yet available pending further investigation, according to Sonora DPS Sgt. Tanner Purvis.

Weather conditions were clear and the road was dry, according to the report.

The posted speed limit on I-10 in that location is 80 mph.

DPS Trooper Joaquin Gallegos investigated the incident.
