Sonora Cross Country athletes competed in Sonora Monday, October 7, during the district preview meet at Sonora Golf Course.

The Invitational event hosted by Sonora High School welcomed runners from around the area including Wall, Brady, Ballinger, Reagan County, Grape Creek and TLCA San Angelo.

Varsity and Junior Varsity runners took part in the opportunity to work on improving their times before the District meet next week.

Results from the meet were not available at the time The Devil’s River News went to press. They will be reported in next week’s edition.

Leading up to the district preview, Sonora varsity and junior varsity cross country runners have been working on their pace while competing against area District 3A Regional I runners this season.

On Wednesday, October 2, Sonora varsity cross country runners earned seventh place and sixth place respectively while participating at Ballinger.

Jalen Lopez led the Broncos with a personal seventh place finish. Esmeralda Salazar led the Lady Broncos.

Lopez was followed by Hunter O’Banon, 12th, Fernando Gonzalez, 33rd, Jacob O’Banon, 71st, Kalvin Hernandez, 84th.

Miguel Montoya, Leo Alviso, Ariel Salazar, Juan Ruiz and Rino Hernandez also competing in the Ballinger meet.

Varsity girls also competing at Ballinger included Fernanda Gonzalez, 28th, Aleasha Smith, 33rd, Angela Gonzalez, 49th, Harley Daniel, 74th, Analy Palacios and Montse De La Fuenta.

The Broncos and Lady Broncos were in Miles the week before where they claimed the Championship by 11 points over the Bulldogs.

The Lady Broncos were awarded second place ahead of Mason.

Lopez led the Broncos taking home a personal fourth place finish. Close behind was Fernando Gonzalez, 5th, Hunter O’Banon, 6th and Jacob O’Banon in 8th place.

Fernanda Gonzalez led the Sonora ladies also taking fourth place across the finish line. She was followed by Esmeralda Salazar, 6th and Angela Gonzalez in 8th.

On September 18, Sonora cross country runners traveled to Irion County.

The Broncos finished the meet in fifth place and the Lady Broncos finished in 7th.

Fernando Gonzalez and Jalen Lopez finished the course 9th and 14th.

Angela Gonzalez and Esmeralda Salazar took places 20 and 26.

Sonora’s cross country athletes will compete at home again next week on Wednesday, October 16, while hosting the District meet at the Sonora Golf Course.

Everyone is encouraged to spend the day outdoors cheering on the runners.
