Austin John Rodriguez was taken into custody at 4:02 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28th on W. 2nd Street in Sonora, ending a day-long manhunt following a murder the previous evening on Glasscock Avenue.

Law enforcement personnel responded to a 9-1-1 call in the 600 block of Glasscock Avenue on Tuesday evening.

Within moments, the Sonora Police Department, Sutton County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers began looking for Rodriguez after witnesses named him as the man that shot and killed Cynthia Gail Luna, 39.

Luna’s family and friends were posting on social media platforms shortly after the shooting accusing Rodriguez of shooting her in her home.

Storms in the area prevented Luna from being transported by AirMed helicopter, so she was taken by ambulance to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo where she reportedly succumbed to her wounds.

A police alert was sent out early Wednesday, May 28, 2025, seeking the whereabouts of Rodriguez as officers from multiple law enforcement agencies scoured Sonora. Aerial drones and a DPS helicopter was deployed before the capture.
